About this tool

Computers store text as numbers. Each character is turned into one or more bytes using UTF-8, and a byte can be written in several ways: as eight binary digits, two hex digits, a decimal number from 0 to 255, or an octal number. This tool shows all of those views of the same data.

Plain English letters use one byte each, while accented letters, non-Latin scripts and emoji use two to four bytes. That is why a short emoji produces several codes.

Frequently asked questions

How are the codes separated?

With single spaces. When decoding, spaces, commas and line breaks all work. For binary and hex you can also paste the codes without separators, as long as they are complete bytes.

Why do some characters produce several codes?

Characters outside basic ASCII are stored as two to four bytes in UTF-8, so they show up as two to four codes.

Why does decoding show an error?

A code may contain a digit that does not belong to the chosen format, be larger than 255, or the bytes may not form valid UTF-8 text.
