About this tool
This tool works as a search box for any text. It can find a single character, a word, a whole sentence or a pattern, and it tells you exactly how many matches there are, which is handy for checking how often you use a word.
Match case makes the search case-sensitive, and Whole word avoids matches inside longer words, so searching for “cat” will not match “category”. Advanced users can switch on Regular expression to search with patterns and use groups such as $1 in the replacement.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count how many times a word appears?
Type the word into Find. The match count shows right under the options. Turn on Whole word if you do not want parts of longer words to be counted.
Does Replace all change my original text?
It changes the text in the box, but you can press Undo to get the previous version back. Nothing is sent anywhere or saved.
What is a regular expression?
A regular expression (regex) is a pattern language for searching text. For example, \d+ matches any run of digits. If you do not need patterns, leave the option off and your search is treated as plain text.
Can I use capture groups in the replacement?
Yes, in Regular expression mode. Write $1, $2 and so on in the replacement to reuse parts of each match. In plain mode the replacement is inserted exactly as typed.
