About this tool

Base64 represents data using only letters, numbers and a few symbols, so it can travel safely through systems that only handle plain text, such as emails, JSON and URLs. It is common in web development, for example in data URIs, API tokens and configuration files.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets. This tool converts through UTF-8, so characters such as é, 你 or 👋 are handled correctly, which the plain browser functions btoa and atob do not do on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 secure?

No. It only changes how data is written. Anyone can decode it instantly, so it should never be used to protect sensitive information.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that replaces + with - and / with _ and leaves out the = padding at the end, so the result can be placed in a web address without further encoding.

Why does decoding fail?

The input may contain characters that are not part of Base64, may be cut off, or may decode to binary data such as an image rather than text. This tool decodes text only.

Can I encode files or images?

Not yet. This page works with text.
